Shore doctor honored with Order of Canada appointment LONG-TIME North Shore resident Dr. Alexander Pinkerton has been ap- pointed a Member to the Order of Canada, the Gov- ernor General of Canada announced recently. Pinkerton — a West Vancouver resident since 1959 — was among 75 appointees named by Gov. Gen. Ray Hnatyshyn. “feel very honored, and sur- prised, at the appointment,’’ said Pinkerton from his Vancouver medical practice. ‘‘! had no idea that I had beeu nominated.’ - Pinkerton, 69, was the first trained specialist in physical medi- cine and rehabilitation in B.C. when he came to the province in 1953. : A year later he was named med- ical director of Vancouver’s G.F. Strong rehabilitation centre, a- post he held for 20 years. During the 1960s Pinkerton was one of the pioneers of wheelchair sports in Canada, serving as med- ical support staff that worked with the Canadian Para-Olympic and Wheelchair Olympic teams. He was also responsible. for medical support and planning of Rick Hansen's ‘‘Man-in-Motion”’ world tour. He currently is a board member of the Rick Hansen Foundation. As chairman of the Health Planning Council of B.C. — a position ke held for seven years — he .was a strong proponent of seat-belt legislation. B.C. consequently became the first province in Canada to pass such a law.
