AREA INCLUDES MORE THAN WV WYD Council objects to proposed riding’s name WHAT’S IN a name? Plenty, ac- cording to North Vancouver District Council (NVDC) and at least one North Vancouver lawyer. At the suggestion of North Van- couver lawyer John Lakes, NVDC voted Monday to write the provin- cial government objecting to a re- cent Fisher Commission recom- mendation that would put the district into a new riding called West Vancouver-Capilano. NV INCLUDED In a letter to council Lakes said: “The proposed riding consists of that part of West Vancouver east of 22nd Street and all of North Vancouver City and District north of the Upper Levels Highway and west of Lonsdale. I understand that 49 per cent of the population will reside in West Vancouver and 52 per cent of the population will reside in North Vancouver. “In my opinion the proposed name does not reflect the fact that North Vancouver is an important CAPILANO URGED part of the riding.’’ Council voted to write to the provincial government urging it to adopt the name Capilano or Lions Gate for the proposed new riding. After holding public hearings across the province on electoral boundaries, the Fisher Commis- sion delivered a repart to the pro- vincial government earlier this year recommending several of those boundaries in the province be tedistributed. Collingwood parents raise $5.8m COLLINGWOOD SCHOOL is building an expansion to its existing premises that will give the private school a facility “to rival any independent school in Canada,”’ spokeman Sue Lonsdale said Monday. Parents have raised $5.8 million in little over six weeks, Lonsdale said. An additional $400,000 is still required to complete and equip nine classrooms in the upper storey of the new senior school, which will be attached to the existing premises at 70 Morven Drive in West Vancouver. A cheque for $50,000 towards reaching that total will be presented to headmaster Graham Baldwin by Robert Flynn of St. Louis, Missouri, president and CEO of Fisher Controls, which makes industrial pro- cess controls for the B.C. lumber industry. Nor-Pac Controls president Andy Szocs, a Coll- ingwood parent, has hosted Flynn on his tour of B.C. pulp and lumber mills.
