3 Sunday, June 25, 1989 - North Shore News R.N. DESCRIBES HER JOB Despite the drawbacks, she loves nursing Dear Editor: 1 love being a nurse. I worked in accounting for five years before 1 started nurse’s training. During my training many nurses told me I was crazy to change my career to nurs- ing. I have no regrets. There are many times in my Patients are victims Dear Editor: The consequences of the nurses’ strike are much more damaging than the hospital staff and the government are leading the public to believe. They say ‘‘essential services are being taken care of.’’ What about my mother-in-law who was sched- uled for breast cancer surgery and has now been denied the right to have it because of the strike? Every day the surgery is delayed the cancer grows. This means an increased risk to her life. Why should innocent victims have to suffer? And what exactly does ‘‘essen- tial services’? cover if someone who is in critical condition and needs a heart bypass does not come under this heading? Firefighters OPEN LETTER TO NORTH SHORE RESIDENTS ‘ On behalf of the 1989 North Shore Fire Fighters Hose Reel Fes- tival committee, 1 would like to thank those involved for making this the most successful year ever. In all of Canada, there is no com- munity with greater spirit than the North Shore. Although the firefighters are the event organizers, it requires a tremendous amount of community support from people, groups and businesses. A few of these are as foliows: Save-on-Foods donated all the food items. The nurses have been offered a highly acceptable increase but are “tholding out’’ to see if they can get more. All at the cost of those people whose health is at risk. Don’t get me wrong. { regard the nursing profession as one of the most gruelling professions to be in. But the simple fact is they could have settled and been back helping the people who need the most help. Instead they chose to turn their backs on then in order to use their bargaining power against the gov- ernment. There must be another way to settle this matter, otherwise the blood will be on the government’s and the nurses' hands. Name withheld North Vancouver say thanks municipalities supported us in principle and assisted with man- power and equipment. North Vancouver RCMP Com- munity Policing division supplied us with pamphiets on drinking and driving, stickers and buttons. Cantel Cellular phones supplied us with cellular telephones. Hundreds of volunteers were us- ed including: North Shore Rescue Team and family members, North Shore fire fighters and family members, municipal council members, and, you, the North Shore resident. Once again, thank you, have a good summer. See you May 1990. Dave Burgess NSFFHRF committee work when I stop and am over- whelmed by the awesomeness of my responsibilities — looking after a patient who has just had brain surgery, literally holding his life in my hands, or supporting family members whose loved one is pass- ing away, perhaps has just passed away, to mention a few examples. Though J often stumble home after work limp and exhausted, these varied situations are why I love nursing. If nurses are frazzled and over- worked during the strike, it is not unlike any of the many, many times ! have worked in situations of being short-staffed, or with pa- tient loads so heavy that I miss my breaks and only ‘essential’ patient care is given. I have been nursing for only one year and have already been off work for on2 month with a back injury. Don’t get me wrong. 1 love nurs- ing, and have had only exceilent feedback from my patients. ’'m sure the same is true for most of the excellent nurses we have at Lions Gate Hospital. Many of these wonderful nurses are going to the U.S.A. to work, or changing careers (and convinc- ing their children to never consider nursing as a profession). And because of my enthusiasm I am informed by many of my co-workers that I ama prime can- didate for ‘burn out’ in a few years... but... but I love nursing. Piease support and encourage your local nurses. Danita Braun, R.N.
