THE OTHER right a film was shown locally featuring Dr. Christiaan Barnard, the South African who gave us heart implant surgery. And it occurred to me that if Dr. Barnard were an athlete he would be barred from the Olympic Games, just like Zola Budd. Never mind how great he might be. It also occurred to me that the big lie is alive and well. Joe Clark typifies it, he secing no good in South Africa at all, yet allowing the murderous African National Congress to have offices in Canada. It was Adolf Hitler, I believe, who first said that the bigger the lie, the more people will believe it. But large-scale deception has been course, that South Africa is pure. But it is to say that she is by no means as. bad as she is painted. One has only to examine the case of the Sharpeville Six to see that. The six were blacks {one of them a woman), who were sentenced to death in connection with the murder of a black mayor in Lekoa, a black township. The mayor was forced out of his house, which the A big lie was peddled concerning these blood-lusting criminals: it was mooted abroad that they were innocent, really, and had been condemned... “because they were part of the rioting * crowd.’ In other words, they were “unlucky enough to be nabbed by the police while others skedaddle practised not only by the Nazis (whose first victims were the Ger- mans themselves) but by the world communist movement. And more effectively. During the Spanish Civil War, for instance, Arthur Koestler, then a communist, worked in Spain and Paris as a newspaper correspon- dent. Later, he denounced his erstwhile faith and wrote Darkness At Noon. In his memoirs he described how he and others would plot ‘‘stories’’ about the purity of the Spanish Republican cause, and the utter blackness of Fzanco’s. The stories * would be taken up by dedicated left-wing editors and correspon- dents, and get world coverage. As with then, so with now, especially where South Africa is... concerned. That is not to say, of. ONO LE DOI mob had set on fire, and stoned and hacked and burned to death. His crime was that he had in- creased rents on houses owned by the municipality by $2 a month. The attack had nothing to do with South African politics or apar- theid. Yet the six received world- wide pubiicity. You could have been forgiven for thinking they were saints. Canada, the U.S. and Britain all appealed to the South African government not to carry out the ’ ‘death sentences, and indeed the six have not been executed. - A big lie was peddled concerning these blood- lusting criminals: it - _ was mooted abroad that they were innocent, really, and had been condemned (to quote an Associated Press report and dozens of similar dispatches} ‘*because they were part of the rioting crowd.” In other words, they were unlucky enough to be nabbed by ’ the police while others skedaddled. Those reports were more than slightly slanted. At the time, the South African Embassy in Ottawa provided transcripts of the trial in an effort to show what had really happened, but no one in this coun- try took the slightest notice. Especially not the media. We know who the guys in the black hats are, don’t we! And since then, a lot of other evidence has emerged, some of it from academics who have no axe to grind. All six were deeply implicated. As Professor S.A. Strauss of the . University of South Africa has written, the woman in the case, Therese Ramashola, ‘‘repeatedly * and loudly urged the crowd to kill the deceased.’” One of the men made the gasoline bombs and handed them to the crowd. Another ‘‘threw the first stone, which struck the deceased on the head and felled him.” And so on. None of the six pleaded extenuating circumstances “‘and the court could fine none." Under South African law, the death sentences thus become man- datory. The fiction that the accused just happened to be part of the crowd, came about because the court found that the mob had ‘‘a com- mon purpose.” Also, it could not be proved that any particular indi- vidual had been responsible for the death of the mayor. But ‘‘common purpose”’ is a principle well established in law. If two men armed with pistols break into a house and a person is killed, it doesn’t matter that only one of them fired the fatal shot. They are both guilty.
