Van tables shopping issue THE SUNDAY AND holiday shopping referen- dum issue has been tabled by West Vancouver Municipal Council for one week to allow tyme for additional input from the public. Municipal Clerk Doug Allan presented a report re- quested by Council, discuss- ing alternatives for a propos- ed by-law following a presen- tation by the Park Royal Merchant's Association and mall officials on Sept. 10. Feedback has been receiy- ed from a number of local Tate-paver proups and business associations in- dicating support for a referendum, but) Council seeks further input from at- fected persons regarding such items as suitable hours of opening, which must be in. corporated into the by-law Allan presented Council with four options startung with doing nothing. Allan in- dicated that, apart from the current correspondence tggarding the referendum, _tyyo letters, both com- Lidbver violations of the ing Holiday Shopping Agt, had been received over we past year. ‘He also noted in his report that if a shopping mall were to adopt holiday shopping hours, they are binding to each merchant ‘‘regardless of their preference’’, with the possible exception of the larger department stores. Two other options were to tind out from the electorate in’ November if they would tavor a holiday shopping reterendum in 1198S and, secondly, to hold a referen- dum this November on par- tial Sunday and holiday shopping. Neither of the two were recommended by the Clerk as. firstly, if Council desires a referendum on the issue at hand then it is that which should be posed and not “‘whether’’ or not the elec- torate wishes to be asked the question’’ at future date. The partial or restricted opening option might mean that a store opening on Sun- days and holidays could only sell certain portions of its merchandise, or that only certain types of stores would be able to open. LOGO DESIGN ° Wide open Sunday and hohday shopping would en- sure that West Van mer- chants could compete with other municipalities and not lose business to them. Job creation and increased shopper flexibility have been listed as arguments for the additional shopping days. Become a Friend of BC's Children's Hospital.
