The summer months are high risk
times on B.C. roads and long weekends
can be especially dangerous duc to the
increase of traffic. Last year, 1,758 colli-
sions resulting in four fatalities were
reported to ICBC during the B.C. Day
long weekend.

Impaired driving remains one of the
leading causes of collisions on B.C. roads.
Approximately one third of all motor
vehicle crashes are a result of impaired

Thar’s why police are spending more
time on the roads in Drinking Driving
CounterAttack roadchecks. So far this
year, more than 2.1 million vehicles have
passed through a police roadcheck.
About 4,300 drivers have received a 24-
hour roadside suspension. .

In 1998, 123 people were killed in
alcohol-related crashes on B.C. roads
(according to police-reported crash data).

Many of us associate drinking driving

crashes with the December holiday sea-
son. But in 1998, police reported 147
alcohol-related collisions in December,
and 220 in August.

Approximately 60% of all impaired
driving crashes occur on weekends,

Impaired crashes account for more
than $270 million in ICBC claims each
year.

ICBC reminds all motorists to plan
ahead for a safe ride home. Use alternate
transportation, appoint a designated dri-
ver or call a fitend or family member fora
ride.
