How do | know if my catalytic
converter is worn out and
how does it affect my car's
performance?

Catalytic converters, which
@ were brought into common use FRANK ALLER ;
in the late 70s are devices Allers Autosport
designed to reduce vehicle emissions by burning pollut-
ing gases in the exhaust system. Catalytic converters are
made with platinum, a very expensive metal, and are
designed to withstand extremely high temperatures, but
they do not last forever.

It is ¢ myth that worn out converters cause the exhaust
to smell like rotten eggs. It is true that a number of
engine problems can be traced back to a worn out con-
verter.

It is not uncommon for a catalytic converter to “col-
- lapse” or plug up when it is worn out. This will usually
result in poor fuel economy, loss of power and ultimately
engine damage due to heat buildup.

To the untrained eye, a confusing engine problem that
could cost considerable time and expense to diagnose
may simply be a plugged converter. After all the time -
and expense of testing and adjusting everything, it will
still be necessary to replace the converter. Up until a few
years ago, it was not uncommon for people to simply
cut off worn out converters but with vehicle emission
testing and more sophisticated engine management sys
tems, this is no longer a viable alternative.
