Poets, recreationists, and artists have tried to define their lure, find- ing joy in their own discoveries, while skiers find freedom of mo- tion with every hill. B.C. is the place to be this season if you enjoy skiing. Each ski area has something for everyone from the flamboyant to the serious. Whether it’s relaxing by a crackling fire or taking to the slopes, B.C.’s got it. Blackcomb has the highest ver- tical skiing (1,609 m) in North America, a large alpine area, a variety of runs for the intermediate and low intermediate skier, 48 trails for cross-country skiing, and a full ski school program. It is located on Highway 99, just 120 km north of Vancouver. Big White, located 31 km east of Kelowna, offers skiing for every level, with a ski bowl for single or groups, and spectacular after-ski facilities. Cross-country skiers can take advantage of 25 km for all levels. Over on Grouse Mountain, near downtown Vancouver (15 minutes drive) there is day and night skiing for all levels and well-marked patrolled trails for cross country skiing. Hemlock Valley, 40 km east of Mission, has the longest con- tinuous night skiing in the Lower Mainland. Special family programs and private or group lessons for all levels are avai'able. A perfect get-away this holiday is a trip to Manning Park, 70 km west of Hope on Highway 3. With well-groomed slopes and up-to- date-facilities, Manning Park also accomodates the beginner and the more advanced skier. On the back door of the North Shore lies Seymour, a beginner to intermediate mountain. Ski schcols and wilderness trails for cross— country skiing are also available. Silver Star mountain boasts some 35 runs, superb skiing and facilities. Located near Vernon, Silver Star has full accomodation, ski schools and night skiing. Cross-country trails are patrolled and lighted for night skiing. Some of the finest skiing in the country is offered at Whistler mountain, one of North America’s longest verticals.
