Running in conjunction with the Ski and Winter Sports Show, the race featured a 250-foot ramp rising over the seats and to the roof of B.C, Place Stadium. Former national dowshill ski team member Kerr clocked a world record speed of just more than 82 km-h, while Wills was slightly slower at 81.08 km-h. Jorma Hakoniemi of Finland was third in the close contest. “What we're hoping to do next year is make the course steeper — it was about 32 degrees,’ said co-organizer and North Van- couver resident Leif Nelson. : “There was a lot of friction {on the plastic surface),”’ said Nelson, a speed skier himself. ‘‘Anything we did to try to reduce it only made a difference.of maybe a kilometre.
