So he replaced his trumpet with four clanging bells on a chain round his neck. North Van's Frauk Pew was whirling them around again at the Stadium a week ago last Thursday, Aug. 11. He’s been a devoted Lions fan since the day the team was born and has hardly ever missed a home game. But this was a special date for Frank and they saluted it with a message on the big reader board: “Happy 90th birthday, Frank!" Loyalty and enthusiasm come naturally to the retired engineering draughtsman. Peopie keeps in great shape for his age. A dedicated Shriner, he'll celebrate next spring bis 70th year in Freemasonry. And the same loyalty marks his personal life. He appreciated rhe con- gratulatory letter from Premier Vander Zalm but said the one he’s really looking forward to is the Queen’s, 10 years from now. And if there’s a Lions home game that night, depend on Frank being there again, clanging those darned bells! kh MINUTES COUNT for heart at- tack victims, whose fives can often be saved if someone nearby is trained in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), an easy-to-fearn emergency drill. That's why CPR classes arg one of the North Shore YMCA's inost important pro- grams. But they cost money — in particular for the lifelike dummies, or ‘‘mannequins’’, which are needed in quantity to teach the skill to the maximum number of people. So hats off once again to the West Van Lions Chib and the Howe Sound Lions Club which have both recently donated two more mannequins. Community donations like these enable the “Y"* to train still more lifesaving “First Responders” ready to deal with those first crucial few minutes until the ambulance arrives. The West Vancouver couple, who have been plagued for the last year by the excessive noise from ongoing blasting and drilling in Caulfeild Plateau, finally went public with their story. As a result of the couple’s publicized hardships, development company International Land Corp. agreed to install mufflers on its blasting equipment, and to limit blasting hours to 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday instead of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday. The changes will cost the company more, because the 10 per cent slower blasting capacity with the new mufflers and the lost Saturdays will result in construc- tion delays. But what price can be placed on peace of mind and_ quality of life to local, tax-paying residents who have had to put up with the irritating disturbances for a Jonger-than-reasonabie time because of the ongoing construction? The Kallweits should be congratulated for their per- severance in standing up for their rights, as the deveioper should be, for absorbing the expense and bowing to the residents’ impassioned request.
