Lid. has signed a 10-year contract with the Vancouver Port Corpora- tion to provide terminal services at the Lynnterm port facility in North Vancouver. The contract is merely a for- malization of arrangements already in place, said Dave McGowan, Western Stevedoring’s terminal manager at Lynnterm. Since 1982 when the firm’s five-year contract with the Port Corporation ended, there have been a series of six-month and one-year contracts, he said. “The Vancouver Port Corpora- tion is endeavoring to create some stability in port operations,”’ McGowan said of the new con- tract. Service contracts have also been finalized for the Port Corpora- tion’s other two facilities, Centerm and Vanterm. Lynnterm mainly handles forest products such as plywood and lumber, with 800,000 tonnes pass- ing through in a year. Under the arrangements of the new contract, up to $5 million will be spent on new mobile dock equipment for Lynnterm, he said, adding that no new jobs will result. Langit er -” OPTIONAL ~~. The 30-year-old Kells, who won in 1980, amassed a 2,412 points total to win the prestigious event. Alaskan Jeff Huey, 28, finished in second place, just two points behind Kells. B.C.'s Jim Bamford rounded out the top three. The 27-year-old racked up 2,400 points. Ken Ramsay, 29, of North Van- couver was the only local com- peting in the championship. He finished 26th overall with 2,149 points. Hampered by low cloud throughout, the championship, which ran from July 23 to 27, at- tracted 52 hang-glider pilots to its one aerobatic and two pylon slalom events. Instead of the usual eight rounds, pilots had to make do with three. Fog halted all competition on Saturday. Forty-one pilots battled in the men’s pylon slalom, seven in the women’s and five in the aerobatic competition. In the women's pylon slalom, defending champion Cindy Drozda took first place. The 28-year-old Colorado native amassed 3,012 points, In second with 2,952 points was 33-year-old Californian Connie Bowen. Fellow Californian Karen Schenk, 21, was third with 2,401 points, The 1985 aerobatic winner Mitch McAleer successfully defended his title. Chuck Dugan, 33, and John Heiney, 36, finished second and third respectively. All three are from California. Steve Moyes, last year’s pylon slalom winner, missed the com- petition because of illness. Prize money totalled $6,800, with $5,000 for men’s pylon event, $1,000 for the aerobatics and $800 for the women's slalom. Because the weather had reduced com- petitive rounds, prize money in the men’s slalom was split among the top 10, rather than the top five fin- ishers. Kells picked up $1,200.
