8 - Wednesday, March 2, 1988 - North Shore News MAILBox & SKI RESCUE COMPENSATION the Dear Editor: I agree and disagree with your News Viewpoint on Rescue Com- pensation (Feb. 14). 1 agree that anyone who knowingly goes off the beaten path should pay in full for any rescue operations, and should have no legal recourse against, for example, the owner of the ski lift who got them to the boundary of the ski area. However, 1! strongly disagree that people should not be allowed to go beyond the boundary of a patrolied area, or should be fined for doing so. In my work as an exploration geologist, | am = con- tinually going where others do not go in the mountains, many of which are more dangerous than those of the North Shore. lam responsible for my actions in these arcas, and would expect Venture from’ Hl. St is NOT irresponsible ta go beyond the limits of a patrolled area if you are competent and responsible for your actions; it is an expression of a free spirit who wants to explore the outer limits of our beautiful planet.
