to foam.

The air-filled, cellular structure
of a good-quality foam mattress
conforms exactly to the body’s
curves and contours giving
uniform, overall support.

Noi all foam is of the same
quality, however, and this is where
a consumer education comes in
handy. The quality and durability
of polyurethane foam is largely
determined by its density.

This can range between 1.5
pounds per cubic foot up to 3.5
pounds per cubic foot. Anything
less than 1.8 pounds per cubic foot
is not recommended for long term
adequate support.

Consumers should not be misled
by a firm-feeling mattress. Firm-
ness has nothing to do with
durability or support.

An_ inexpensive firm mattress
can quickly break down if it lacks
the density needed to maintain its
resilience. Many manufacturers
offer foam mattresses in three dif-
ferent grades of firmness, all made
with the same quality foam.

When buying a matiress give it a
rea! workout. Don’t just prod it.

Lie down on it and do a little
tossing and turning. If you don't
sleep by your self, test it out with
your partner.

If you can feel the other person
shifting position, find a mattress
with independent support for cach
person.

Lie with your arms straight and
then roll on to your side. If you
feel pressure points or discomfort
in your arms or hips, find a less
firm mattress. .

Lie on your back. A good mat-
tress should support your spine in
the same shape as someone with
good upright posture, with chin,
pelvis and stomach tucked in.

Another tip. If you really want

to experience the pleasures of
foarn, don’t just put it on top of
your old boxspring. A boxspring
lasts only as long as the mattress.
Invest in a proper foundation.
Foam on foam is quiet and gives
total, even support.

A good quality mattress will
have a firm foam core with a high

support factor sandwiched between
one-inch layers of less firm foam,
for extra comfort. Premium
models have layers in a variety of
convolutions that offer different
surface comfort to the sleeper.

Foam mattresses are lighter in
weight, easy to transport, turn and
sheet.
