VOLUNTEERS, neighbors and parents are what the YMCA is all about, keeping it running for the enjoy- ment of the communi- ty, from toddlers to grandparents. And the new YMCA scheduled to open in North Van- couver this September is NO exception. By BARRETT FISHER Setting up headquarters in the old premises of Cloverley Elementary School, located on Hendry St., the new North Van Y has had nothing but positive response by the surrounding neighborhood, says Mary Anne Purdy, program direc- tor at the West Vancouver Y and now in charge of organizing the new branch. Since Cloverley School was boarded up two years ago, with declined enrol- ment, Purdy says the neighborhood is now pleased to see the premises buzzing with activity again, being us- ed and recycled. Plans to go ahead with a North Vancouver YMCA began around 1978/9 when the centre did a membership study and found that many patrons were from North Van and wanted a closer fa- cility, Purdy explained. But Y organizers wanted to make sure that a new location would work in co-operation, rather than overlap, with North Van Recreation and North Shore Neighborhood House facilities. ‘‘The planning process for the new facility has included surrounding neighbors’ in. put,”’ Purdy says. ‘‘We did a survey within a two-mile ra NEIGHBOR Frank Joyce, above right, enjoys building and renovating, and here he helps make the new North Vancouver YMCA become a reali- ty by making the sign for the facility, which is taking over the building dius interviewing people, and the recreation oppor- tunities seem to be limited in that area. We'll be catering to the specific neighborhood for now.’’ * Purdy says she met with the Recreation Commussion and the Neighborhood House to co-ordinate’ the programs, and she em- phasizes that they would be offering something different ‘Our programs wall offer a Election ’84 All candidates Town Meeting at Park Royal tiear federal candidates discuss key Capilano Riding issues Tuesday, August 28th 7:30 p.m. Park Royal’s South Mall Enter mall by Eatons ‘Town Meeting’ Sponsored by : im West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce different atmophere, a dif- ferent local and different times, it’s not quite the same.”’ When Purdy talks about the help and input the North Van Y has received from surrounding neighbors, it’s rather heart warming. One neighbor, Frank Joyce, who enjoys building, renovating and making stage props, 1s crafting the new sign for the building.
