The George family has been entertaining since the early 50’s when Leonard was five and Bobby in his early 20’s. Bobby played the piano accordian, Chief Dan the bass, Leonard the electric mandolin and cousins Paul and Art assisted. It was definitely a non- Indian performance, until Chief George took them in hand and moved into their own Coast Salish customs. They became a_ polished group. Zig Uj As Bobby said, “Mother was our best critic and made us work tll it was right for the public. She was also our manager.” In the 70’s Bobby wrote, produced and directed a production for the Queen Elizabeth Theatre called “Song of Slal-wa-too.” He named it after their Burrard Inlet Reserve. It was a success. “It was the only time we really made money on our work,” Bobby said. “Song of Slal-wa-too” showed the violence of our time and also the love and drama. Our sisters, brother- in-laws, brothers, all the family was in it! “I remember my _ sister Anne doing the ‘Dance of Lost Love’ with just a pale light playing upon her. The rest of the time just the light from the camp fire was on stage.
