New habits take patience and persistence but, luck- ily, the end result justifies the effort. In 1972, Preventive Medicine journal reported a five year study of seven thousand adults. Their adherence to seven simple habits was associated with longer life and better health. The habits were: -~ three meals a day at regular intervals — eating breakfast -—~ moderate exercise — seven to cight hours sleep nightly : — moderate weight —_no smoking : -Persistence pays off — alcohol in moderation or not at all. Three nutritious meals at regular intervals reduce the desire for in-between meal snacks. Research suggests that those who don’t eat breakfast constitute more than ninety per cent of the overweight population, Insufficient “fuel” at breakfast makes one more apt to reach for a doughnut with mid-morning coffee. Seven to-eight hours sleep nightly makes good sense. Moderate exercise carries its own inherent benefits and, with the already suggested dietary habits, helps achieve moderate weight. The ill- effects of injudicious smoking and .drinking dare well documented. A proper approach to these complete the seven healthful habits. So these habits are easily stated, but not so easily eared.
