clinics held

THE CANADIAN Red | Cross
Society is asking residents to give
them aogift this Christmas -— the
gift of a blood donation.

The North Shore will be holding
three blood donor cHrics this
month,

North Vancouver clinics will be
Neld Dee. 17 and (8 frony 2:30-8
Pm. at Lions Gate Hospital's
medical day centre gymnasium,

In West Vancouver, the blood
donor clinic will be held Dee. 27
from 3-8 pom. at West Vancouver
Recreation Centre, 780-22nd
Street.

“The best gift you can give is a
blocd donation,” said Len Lif-
chus, director of blood donor
recruitment,

Each blood donation is a gift to
several patients because the blood
is separated into its components
of red cells, plasma and platelets.
Each component is used to treat a
different condition.

Red cells are used for people
who have extensive bleeding
because of injuries while plasma is
used to treat burn victims.
Platelets are necessary for the
treatment of certain types of
cancer.

“Unfortunately, the holiday
season is also a season for
automobile and home accidents,
so that there is always a great
need for blood at this time of the
year,”’ Lifehus said.

Clinics are held regularly at the
Red Cross’s permanent centre at
4750 Oak Street, Vancouver,
Monday to Thursday, 12-8 p.m,
and Fridays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. For
