Lower Lonsdale cleanup overdue Dear Editor: il am confused by the statements in your Sept. 20 front page story that three men ‘‘have been living in a concrete bunker at the foot of Forbes for the past five months’’ and that one of these men lived at the Olympic Hotel until it was “sold to developers,’’ which I un- derstand tock place much more recently, Were these men actually displaced by hotel demolition or have they “‘been piaced by the Squamish Indian Band in other accommodations over the past months’? only to ‘‘keep moving back to the bunker’’? Being a resident in proximity to both the Olympic and St. Alice Hotel sites, I have been plagued with noisy drunks roaming the streets and lanes after closing hours, not to mention vandalism and theft. I am also tired of seeing some- one continuously rummaging through our building's garbage containers — not for food, mind you, but for empty beer cans, cnly to cash them in to buy more li- quor. I cannot visit the local liquor store at 2nd and Chesterfield as many of these same types of peo- ple loiter around the front door, yell obscenities in an intoxicated state and beg for money. I refuse to walk my dog in this area, as people loiter and/or ‘‘live’’ in the vacant buildings and land sur- Letter was meant as Dear Editor: I take exception to T. Wilson Jones’ letter of Sept. 22 in response to Iris Cann’s letter of Aug. 25 regarding coyotes. Mrs. Cann was simply trying to warn other pet owners that the coyotes had returned, as they have for the past few summers, to West Vancouver. Of course all true animal lovers are delighted to sez the coyotes, but coyotes do not distinguish between rats and cats, and therefore responsible pet owners should take precautions to keep their animals safe. Shop employee thanked Dear Editor: . Grateful thanks are due to Mrs. Smyrl of Dundarave Stationery. I placed a bag of groceries on the floor at my feet when shopping there. The customer next to me picked up the bag and took off. As a senior with a cane, I was unable to chase her, but Mrs. Smyri did, and retrieved my $11 worth of groceries. R.M. McLeod West Vancouver BILL welcomes his clientele rounding the West Ist, 2nd, Ches- terfield and Lonsdale area. These people have been living in these conditions long before they closed the St. Alice or Olympic Hotel; however, your paper insists on blaming new developers for their housing dilemma. Why don’t you outline both sides of the issue? I congratulate the developers and those council members who voted for new development in the Lower Lonsdale area. I do not want to see another West End full of towering highrises, but I feel the time is jong overdue to clean up this area, be it highrise/lowrise res- identia! or retail buildings. Susan Cummings North Vancouver a warning I know that Mrs. Cann has received several phone calls in response to her letter from people who have lost cats to the coyotes. Since moving to West Van- couver my parents have befriended the local wild animals, especially the raccoons, and are concerned for their welfare. Perhaps T. Wilson Jones would care to drop by their house, where he wiil likely find a family of raccoons snoozing on the sundeck, and co-existing quite amicably with the household pets.
