Flames’ streak continues

THE NORTH Shore Winter Club
Flames continued their winning
ways in West Coast Junior Hockey
League action on the weekend as
they turned back the Seattle Nor-
thwest Americans 6-3 and squeak-
ed past the Grandview Steelers 7-6.

The weekend victories left the
Flames comfortably ensconced in
first place, 11 points ahead of
second-place Seattle.

On Nov. 28 at the North Shore
Winter Club, the visiting Seattle
Americans could well have had the
Flames on the ropes in the first
period had it not been for the
superb play of goaltender Gary
Knight.

But instead, while outshooting
the Flames 16-7, the Americans led
only 1-0 arter the first period.

The Flames came out flying in
the second period, assuming com-
mand of the game with three quick
goals within a four-minute span.

Kelly Lawrence combined with
Ken Savage to put the Flames on
the scoreboard with the equalizer
at the 1:39 mark, and then the
locals went ahead two minutes
later as Dan Payne's blistering shot
from the point found the opening
just inside the post on the
goaltender’s stick side.

Just over a minute later, Andrew
Meritees one-timed Port’s r2zs to
give the Flames a 3-1 les.

With three minut<s remaining in
the period, the Americans pulled

to within one goal on a power-play
effort.

But less than a minute later,
Scott Stirling connected with a
screen shot from the blueline for
what proved to be the game win-
ner, restoring the Flames’ two-goal
lead heading into the third period.

The Flames added two more in
the third period, Kevin Buhr scor-
ing from Willy Erickson and
Wayne Maurice at 6:25, followed

by Port’s goal from Merilees and

Payne with nine minutes remain-
ing

Seattle closed out the scoring
with another power-play goal at
13:35 for the 6-3 final.

Over the three periods Seattle
outshot the Flames 41-40.

In the Nov. 29 7-6 squeaker at
Grandview, the Flames fell behind
1-0 just four minutes into the
game, but managed the equalizer
on Port’s power-play goal from
Savage and Lawrence midway
through the period before the
Steelers scored again for a 2-1
lead.

Two second-period goals by
Payne were pivotal in keeping the
Flares’ winning streak alive as he
knotted the score at two, and then
produced the equalizer again just
seconds after the Steelers had
taken a 3-2 lead.

Lawrence scored on the power
play in the closing minutes of the
period to give the Flames a 4-3
margin heading into the final
frame.

NV hosts curling championship

THE NORTH Shore Winter Club
in Morth Vancouver will be the site
of the 1988 Pepsi Juniors curling
champions for Canadian junior
women and men, curling associa-
tions and event sponsor Pepsi Cola
Canada announced recently.

“The event will run from March
26 to April 2,’’ said Canadian
Curling Association president
Harvey Mazinke. ‘*The champion-
ship will be run one month later in
1988 because of the 1988 Winter
Olympics in Calgary starting mid-
February.”’

Vancouver will do a great job. ‘‘I

George, Stirling and Savage for the
game winner at 18:05.

Flames’ goaltender Mike Palma
stopped 33 Steeler shots while
North Shore shooters fired 55
shots at the opposition netminder.

At the North Shore Winter Club
Dec.5 at 8:45 p.m., the Flames
host the Burnaby Bluehawks.
