Mailbox - N. Van District Counuil responds to P&T remarks OPEN LETTER TO WRIGHT Your Aug. 30 Sunday Brunch col- umn contained some unpalatable fodder regarding North Vancouver District, Council's concerns about the Park and Tilford development proposal. Ina Jast effort to ensure the facts are straight we offer the following: 1. Contrary to the column, district council has shown marked enthusiasm for the North Shore film industry. A motion of support was unanimously passed, fan. 5, and conveyed to the city council. It was reported in your paper Jan. 21 and again May 6. 2. The labelled “march” of the district. mayor to the city’s June public hearing was not a one-per- son show as you imply. As noted at the hearing (and in your paper). the council’s position on the Park and Tilford development was unanimous. Our concerns were clearly stated by the mayor as council's ‘‘messenger™’ with district council members in attendance. At the request of the city, only one representative spoke. This action was caused by a lack Of city response to our requests over the past 10 months to meet with the district in a cooperative approach to addressing traffic problems etc. Our entreaties were “received and filed’? by city coun- cil. The public hearing was the district’s last chance to put our concerns before the cily as there is normally no further opportunity for discussion on bylaws following a hearing. While we regretted having to resort to such means of com- munication and stated so at the hearing, this appeal did gain the attention our concerns warranted, and a subsequent August joint mecting of both councils to review traffic implications was Inbelled positive and productive by all. 3. Apart from Mr. Wright’s ref- erence to ‘‘naive’? and ‘‘simple- minded citizens’’ — an assessment with which we take umbrage (although it was no doubt meant tongue-in-check) — the column contains another amazing state- ment: that being ‘‘... any traffic problems with respect to the development would eventually be sorted out anyhow.'"’ We ask when, by whom and at whose cost? It would certainly not be to the developers’ account if deter- mined after project approval. NOI Free market? Bah! Humbug! Dear Editor: G. Merchant's Sept. 2 letter ad- vocates that the free market system prevail with respect to cable TV systems, and subscribers be re- quired to purchase or rent a con- verter and pay a flat fee for ‘‘all available services.” Here | thought a free market system meant | was free to accept or decline gocds or services available commercially. | have been able co decide to accept cable service, but decline any or all the supplementary channel services in which I have no particular interest, but which the cable system understandably would dearly love to have me buy — and, again, This council feels that to try and address such issues beforehand is one of the duties of deeted of- fictals. Were we to ignore (he saat- ter, we would ‘ay odds” that the press would be the first to point out the error of aur ways. tn Fact, owas already said in the Nows” May 15 editorial! Hopefully the joint council meeting and direction determined will now result in a reasonable res- olution fot all parties that will well serve North Vancouver residents. Mayor Marilyn Baker Ald.
