AS SCHOOL fast approaches, it is
important for kids to know basic
bicycle rules for their daily back-
ta-school treks.

When children ride bikes to
school, parents should be sure the
bicycle is in good working condi-
tion, with all parts moving
smoothly and everything working
well,

Seats should be properly ad-
justed for the child to allow for
safe control.

Parents should stress the dangers
of riding two to a bike and
discourage this practice as much as
possible. Control is seriously
hampered by doubling up.

Proper hand signals are a must
and cyclists have to obey all traffic
control signs and signals — in-
cluding stop signs, speed limits and
traffic lights.

Proper reflectors and lights will
become necessary should the child
tide the bike to school on the
darker winter mornings. The
sooner these are installed, the bet-
ter. The longer the job is delayed,
the more it is likely forgotten.

Once at school, a sturdy lock
and chain will deter thieves from
making off with the bicycle.
