OSE UMS NBRESE EATS oS OLA TE SUE NEB ESSIEN Ta) THE WEST Vancouver Sketch Club will be drawing up celebrations for its 40th anniversary this year. Founded in 1947 by local art en- thusiast Eileen Laurie, the club has grown steadily over the years to today’s roster of over 200 active members. Club president Janet Holburn explains that the club seeks to promote an increased interest in and appreciation of fine art. To this end, the club hosts various guest lecturers who give art-related talks to the membership. Works produced by the club’s members include watercolors, oils, pastels and acrylics. There are very few actual sketches and no sculpture. PROS, AMATEURS The non-profit organization counts both professional and non-professional artists among its ranks, ‘“We have non-professionals who are just starting out,’’ ex- plains Holburn. ‘‘And these are the people we try to encourage.”’ "1300 Robson Street Members are required to submit a minimum of four new works each year. In the spring and the fall, the club holds juried shows with about 80 to 100 works. Bach club member can submit a total of three works to the twice- yearly shows. Because there is usually only display space for a portion of the works, the best must be selected. “We have professional people who come and jury the show,”’ Holburn adds. So when the public sees the show, the club is putting its best brush forward. ° After the juried exhibitions, some of the works are displayed in such loral buildings as West Van- couver Municipal Hall, West Van- couver Health Centre and Hollyburn Country Club. ALL AGES Al! of the artists live on the North Shore and Holburn says the club is a mixture of all ages. ‘‘But I don’t know how old the oldest would be or how young the youngest would be,’’ she says. Club meetings are an orderly at- fair. A replica of a Kwakuitl speaking stick helps keep the speakers in check and everybody follows the rules — anyone who a.week;7am- Lam “, Open? Holburn estimates the club is growing about !0 per cent a year, but cannot say if people are becoming more interested in art. “Y would hope it’s because of more awareness of art,’’ the club president says. A member since 1981, Holburn was painting before she joined the club and says the club has quite a few top-quality artists. ‘‘A lot of members of the club are also members of the Canadian Federa- tion of Artists,’ she explains. Every year, the club sponsors the Sam Black scholarship at the University of B.C. for a promising fine arts student. The winner of the $200 award is then invited to exhibit works at one of the club’s juried shows. {"HEARD ABOUT CHEERS | GUNNING COUPON CAPER ... 77 openers angers ees SERA Ebr ocmt Sony eT 23 - Friday, January 16, 1987 - North Shore News - Best eats of | _ 1986 | PAGE 24, NEWS photo Tom Burley WEST VANCOUVER Sketch Club president Janet Holburn relaxes with a cup of coffee before brushing up on her latest work.
