C9 - Sunday, July 22, 1934 - North Shore News LOCAL AND LUSCIOUS ‘‘Farmers’ Market’’ sign is a perennial lure, promising ‘‘fresh’? and ‘‘local’’ and, maybe, ‘‘less expensive’’. We are longing for the one anticipated at the Quay, about which hard information is elusive, and meantime enjoy the stalls on the Wosk lot, and, owing to a ter- ritorial dispute, kitty-corner off Lloyd at Marine. Both were quick off the mark with local strawberries, which have been especially toothsome this year. I learn- ed about two new strains, one called ‘‘Schuchsan’’, sort of knobby but very red, very juicy, and just as sweet as they should be. The other, ‘‘Rainier’’, didn’t seem to me quite as much of a knock- out, visually, but good enough eating. It is inconceivable that anyone should get tired of strawberries, it would surely be like getting tired of wine, or of sunsets, but should you feel you can’t face another naked strawberry, try this recipe, called ‘‘Cranachan’’, reputed to be authentic Scot- tish fare. Personally, I can’t . see any true Scot messing up ~ his cherished tipple in this fashion, but here you are: You’ll need, for three servings: 1 cup of ralled oats 1 cup of whipping cream, the kitchen ranger by Eleanor 7 Godley chilled 1 Tbsp. of sugar 2 tsp. of Scotch whiskey Fast, fabulous mea | pint of fresh strawberries, quartered Preheat the oven to 325 F. Spread the oats on a baking sheet and toast them for about five minutes. Str them once, then remove from the oven to cool. Beat the cream until you get soft peaks, add the sugar and the whiskey and beat to stiff. Fold the oats into this, then layer with the berries in a parfait or big wine glass, cream first, berries last. May I have the next reel? Actually, these litthe tem- porary outlets should be call- ed ‘‘Entrepreneurs’ Markets’’, for few of those involved are actual pro- ducers. They bring their fruit and vegetables from Rich- mond or Delta or Ab- botsford, but in most cases it was indeed laid yesterday or picked this morning or dug up last night, and their offer- ings are fresh and young. The group of the Wosk iot bring their own honey, from Lions Bay of all places. When you think of Lions Bay you think of overflowing creeks, eh? but apparently the bees turn their backs on the sandy shores and rocky ravines and head up the mountain to the pervasive fireweed. One of the-stalls tended by the other group, on Lloyd, does have his own orchard in Oliver, with sons to pick the fruit and truck it down for sale. He had masses of splen- did cherries late last week, promising _ tree- ripened peaches by this week- end coming up. Gooseberries were displayed on the trestle- table across from him, and the same people sometimes have fresh flowers. Both little markets offer eggs, though so far 1 have seen only brown ones. Little new potatoes are a perennial target when one visits these transitory **shops’’. I feel about them as”I do about strawberries, how could one possibly tire of them?
