Why? Because 1 is costly and it can be easily learned. Following these simple directions and using the pro- per sewing tools can help you alter your garments. 1. If the garment to be altered has been worn, wash or dry clean it because iron heat and pressure will force soul further into the fabric. For a hem alteration, release the hem before cleaning. 2. After measuring and marking fitting adjustments, the next step is the mpping process. Remove seams, hems, pleats, cuffs, darts or waistband, depending on the specific area of alteration. 3. Before starting to remove stitches, study the onginal construction techni- “que making notes, if necessary, so that new stit- ching can be done in the same manner. 4. To remove | straight machine stitching easily, cut thread every 2 to 4 inches, repeat cuts on under side at Staggered intervals. Then pull out short lengths of thread, turning over, back and forth until seam 1s open. 5. To remove zig zag suches cut through the thread on one side with a seam rip- per then pick oOuj excess threads. Pulling threads before cutting will only tighten the stitches. 6. After stitches have been removed, the mpped area should be pressed with a dampened cloth to close holes made by the machine needle and to remove seamline creases. 7. To remove hems sewn chp thread between stutches and pull to the right. 8. To help remove stub- born crease lines, use a solu- uion of half white vinegar and half water applied with a fine nozzle bottle or an artist's brush. Use a hot iron setting with a dampened press cloth. 9 Press newly-stiched seams together before press- Ing open 10.
