WEST VAN ANSWER COULD BE COSTLY lilegal suites prompt bonding idea By CHARLES MEYER IT COULD COST West Vancouver homeowners thousands of dollars if municipal council ap- proves recommended changes to current zoning by-laws governing in-law suites in single family homes. In a report to council Monday Development Director Bob Collier sug- gested present in-law and il- legal suite control mechanisms be altered to curb the sharp density mse in single family zoned areas. He expressed concern that many homeowners. are building additional suites to their homes despite Municipal restrictions which disallow more than one legal unit in a single family home. “We have explored the possibility of controlling the number of kitchens in a dwelling unit as a simple ad- ministrative technique,” said Collier. “It is now our opi- nion that this will not solve the problems (of illegal suites).” He urged council to imple- ment a bonding policy by which a homeowner or SPCA awarded grant STRAY DOGS and cats should feel a little gratitude for North Vancouver District council. He added: “The old $1,000 bond (a zoning by-law re- quirement) should be in- creased to a more mean- ingful level in light of con- temporary real estate values.” Alderman David Finlay agreed with Collier and said: “If it means effective control of in-law suites then we'll go back to the previous bonding format.
