C6-Wednesday, September 24, 1980 - North Shore News: When did someone last poke you with a needle? No rude comments, please. Tetanus infection, better known as lock-jaw_ is charming. A scratch or cut, can do a fine job on the unprotected. In the old days, your jaws would lock and their favorite method of getting food through the clenched molars was to knock out a front tooth and insert a straw. You usually died anyway, but at least they sent you on your way with a full stomach. Things aren’t a whole lot better today, when it comes to treating lock-jaw. They keep your teeth intact by feeding you through a tube in your arm but your chances of dying are much the same. Guess who gets lock-jaw? Not the little kids playing around a beach barefooted because their Mommies (or their schools) see to it that they get “shot” regularly. It’s the middle-aged tourist who goes to a foreign country, preferably tropical, and munches around the beasts in a corral. Or buys something from a. street merchant. Or gets a blister on the heel, while wearing sandals. Stupid eh? Our Canadian health units give free shots for Tetanus, combined with typhoid (A and B), called n't leave home without them T.A.B.T. It takes a moron to go anywhere without them. Lord knows I hate in- noculations. From the first poke of a syringe to the sore arm that follows, I'd sooner skip the whole procedure. Nurses and doctors spend a by Barbara McCreadie lot of time jabbing people and are so darn “matter-of- fact” when they get hold of me, they chill my spine. “Oh, T.A.B.T., eh? Nice day, isn’t it?” Wham! But, I won't leave home without it. T.A.B.T. is a series of three shots that protects you from the horrors of disease. Aren't we lucky? Some places have resident horrors that can send your relatives out in search of cemetary plots. The malaria mosquito — Anopheles, if you must be technical — bites for keeps. Even if you get lucky and avoid the worst form, which brings encephalitis and quick death, the other forms recur for the rest of your life. Old movies made quite a show of the “exotic” fever and chills of recusring malaria and make it look quite glamorous. If you want the real story, ask anyone who has tried it. Be- prepared for profanity. If you are planning to visit any tropical area, check with our local health department. They've got charts showing every part of the world that is plagued by malaria and will guide you to appropriate medication to be taken before and during your visit. Don't rely on mosquito netting. Many a travelier has been chewed while standing in an airport lounge. The mosquitos turn out in full force at sunset. ‘ Hawaii, Fiji, Australia and some Caribbean islands are safe. Other parts of the world aren’t — including a lot of Africa, the Middle East Asia and South America. Big hearted biker LOS ANGELES (UPI) - Late in 1978, Arthur Meyers’ heart decided it had had enough of the tension and long hours of an accountant and it quit working. If you find an agent who fills you in on these details, cherish him. Cholera and Yellow Fever are two other menaces that can “getcha”. Cholera is a bacterial disease, often passed around through eating contaminated sea- food, plucked out of water that has a high concentration of sewage. How is an in- nocent visitor to know that those delicious morsels were caught at the end of a sewage pipe? The fisherman in’ Taiwan or Tijuana isn’t about to tell you. Cholera shots are available, too, at your local health unit. Get cracking and check out your destination against cholera charts. The shots can give you a helluva sore arm for a couple of days and a possibie feeling of “general malaise” for 24 hours. Beats six feet of soil any old day. Yellow fever is another mosquito-borne illness. A bit more rare since swamps have been drained, it still crops up in some parts of the world. The vaccine is free, but must be administered by the main health unit in your province simply because one vial contains enough for three people and to cut costs... they line up three peop who need the stuff and WAIKIKI *419 8 Days, 7 Nights, Al & Hote!
