Don't look now but the B.C. Lions are tied for first place in the CFL west. After a secmingly-easy 26-6 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Empire Stadium last Tuesday the B.C. Lions appear to be well in control of their game this season. Joe Paopao passed well; the defence, led by former Offensive star Leon Bright, was abie to stop the Bombers when necessary; and the specialty teams were superb. The Lions would seem to be fully deserving of their 2-0 record. One doesn’t want to sound like a pessimist but don't forget what happened last year. B.C. won thei first four games, tied the next, against Edmonton and then continued their winning ways for.a few more weeks. Halfway ..throngh .the season they Jled the. western: con- ference. —_—- They finished third and lost to Calgary in the semi- final, —~ There were some signs Tuesday. that this. year's version of the Lions might fade in the stretch, much like last year’s model. SELF-INFLICTED Most of Winnipeg's troubles this scason(three straight defeats) have becn self-inflicted. In all their games so far the Bombers have been able to penetrate deep into opposition territory only to come up empty, or with only a field goal. Soccer team needs players The North Shore Attalos, a team in the 3rd division of the Vancouver and District socecr league, are in the process of rebuilding for the next scason. The team will be holding practises at Klahanic Park every Thursday night, and welcomes nacw players. Anybody intcrested in trying out for the Attafos should contact Alan Hird at 980- 5284. By TERRY LAVENDER Tuesday night exception. -. Time after time the visitors crossed B.C.’s 30 yard line only to be foiled by dropped or misthrown passes. At least three Winnipeg touchdowns were prevented this way-not B.C.'s pass defence so much as Winnipeg's own mistakes. That the Bombers were able to get so close to the goal line should be cause for some wo!ry. At the same time, B.C.’s offensive threat was not all it could have been. Over half of B.C.’s points came from Lui Passaglia-four field goals and two converts. The of- fense only scored one touchdown-the Lions’ other major came on an beautiful 65 yard punt return by Harry Holt. At one time Paopao brought his team to within three yards of the Blue Bomber goal ine. On three tries he wasn't able to get the ball in for the touchdown. But these are things to worry about in the future, namely B.C.’s next game- against the defending Grey Cup champion Edmonton Eskimos. ~ For now the Lions ‘are undefeated and tied for first. And they did play an exciting game last Tuesday. Club teaches how to row The Vancouver Rowing Club is offering introductory rowing courses for the second year in a row. SO successful were last year's courses that a number of the 84 praduates won medals in the B.C. summer games. Others are com- peting in local and provincial regattas and many more are still rowing for recreation and to keep fit. The course, for adult men and women, costs $60 and starts Monday, August 18. It lasts for five weeks, two evenings a week. The course will be held at the Van- couver Rowing Club in Coal Harbour, Stanicy Park.
