HLRA board
should resign,
says Mitchell

Mitchell has called for the resig-
nation of the entice board of the
taxpayer-funded Health Labor
Relations Association CHLRA)

Mitchell made the comment
after reports were published in the
Vancouver Sun of excessive and
unauthorized spending by HLRA
executives, including HLRA presi-
dent Gordon Austin.

After the reports surfaced last
week, the HLRA board fired
Austin.

“It is clear the board was aware
of the lack of firtancial controls
and misuse of public funds by
HLRA executives for many
months and yet took no action,”
said Mitchell.

He also noted that the public is
eagerly awaiting the report of the
comptrollier-general's investigation
into the HLRA affair.

“Once this report is released,
we will be able to more fully
determine the extent of politica!
influence over the HLRA and
which cabinet ministers benefited
from the favish spending of
association executives,’’ said
Mitchell.

The HLRA is the publicly-
funded bargaining agent for about
190 health-care facilities in B.C.
