COLLIDING with a wild animal is
one of the potential hazards for
motorists on B.C.’s mountainous
route — and not surprisingly the
winter season is when most of these
incidents occur.

Wildlife collisions are among the cop 10
factors which contribute to motor vehicle
crashes in this province each vear.

in 1997, the Insurance Corporation of
B.c. handled 7,033 animal claims, costing
policy holders more than $14.6 million.

Weekends can be especially hazardous for
wildlife crashes when many vacationers drive
through wilderness areas to reach ski and
winter recreation areas.

There are a number of steps drivers can
take to heip minimize the risk of colliding
wich an animal: :

&% Slow down when you see wildlife on or
near a highway where animals are likely to be
feeding.

@ Remember that animals are unpredictable
— they may charge without warning s0 be
alert when driving, especially at dusk or
dawn.

B Give yourself time to react and don’t over-
drive your headlights.

BB Use hazard lights to alert other drivers that
animals have been sighted.

Remember to pay attention to those
wildlife warning signs — they've been posted
for your safety.
