— Wednesday, February 4, 1998 — North Shore News wv school graties shift Move addresses overcrowding lan Noble ian@nsnews.com GRADE 7 students in West Vancouver will stay in elementary school next year to help reduce secondary school overcrowding. Ac the same time, high-tech Rockridge middle school will teach students in grades 8, 9 and 10 next year instead of grades 7, 8, and 9. Sentinel secondary and _ West Vancouver secondary, which has 700 more students than the 1,100 it was built for, will provide instruction for stu- dents in grades 8 to 12. Ironically, last year the school board was considering sending Grade 6 students from Caulfeild to Rockridge to case overcrowding at that elemen- tary school. Instead, in the face of par- ‘ent cpposition to the move, the board installed portables on the site to make room for the students. To ease overcrowding at Caulfeild next year, the Cypress Park primary school will be reopened for kinder- garten to Grade 2 students in September. All elementary schools in West Vancouver will once again serve kindergarten to Grade 7 students. That’s the way the schools were configured before the 1983 school year and the way it currently is in most school districts in ‘the province. Said school board chairman Clive Bird: “I believe it is fair to say thar the vast majority of those who made their opinions known believe that the real benefits of grade reconfigura- tion far outweighed the per- ceived drawbacks. “Parents in particular were enthusiastic in their support of retaining their Grade 7 and 10 DOUG Player ... schoo! populations tell the tale. children in their neighborhood | elementary and middle schools for once year longer.” Bird ‘said that although the major benefit of reconfiguring classes is that it will reduce overcrowding in’ secondary schools, Grade 7 children will benefit by staying ar the schools and with teachers they are familiar and comfortable with. The policy also relieves the anxiety of parents who believe a 12 year old is too young for secondary school, said Bird. West Vancouver School District 45 superintendent of schools Douglas Player said West Van secondary has 1,800 students. The school was built for 1,100. Sentinel has 1,200 students, It was intended to hold 850. Meanwhile, space has opened up in clementary schools in the district. Classes have been = added to Gleneagles, Caulfeild and Bowen.
