That’s the impact of the
combination of nicer sum-
mer weather and the transit
strike that has clogged
streets with more cars and
more bicycles.

The chief complaint from
cyclists is that drivers aren’t
paying attention to them.

‘“‘We have as much right
to the road as they do, but
most drivers don’t seem to
be aware of that,’’ said one
frustrated commuter who
only recently started pedall-
ing to work.

The woman, and _ other
cychsts who have contacted
the News, says drivers often
turn corners in front of
cyclists or change lanes
directly in’ front of them
seemingly without noticing
that they are there.

At the same time, some
drivers are complaining that
cyclists are creating traffic
problems by ignoring traffic
signals and stop signs, weav-
ing in and out of traffic and
holding up lines of cars by
travelling too slowly.

Police, who have received
a number of complaints of
such activity, have served
noticed they'll crack down
on cyclists who aren’t obey-
ing the rules of the road.

Police have a further con-
cern as well — with the in-
crease in the number of
bicycles, the number of bicy-
cle thefts has jumped
dramatically.
