Even that question over-simplifies what the Supreme Court actually did — which was to say that the defin- ition of “spouse” in Ontario’s Family Law Act was inquiring reporter unconstitutional because it excluded gays and lesbians. British Columbia already includes same-sex couples in its definition of spouse and Quebec has similar legisla- tion in the works. It now looks as though the rest of Canada will also have to rewrite family law so that same sex couples are included. We asked a similar question of our readers almost one year ago when B.C. was changing its legislation. At that time, 31% of you with an opinion favoured same sex spousal benefits and 37% did not. It may not be statistically reliable, bur it would appear that heterosexual exclusivity is hardening.
