8 - Friday, January 11. 1991 - North Shore News Dear Editor: Let's face it, your newspaper could use a diet. | understand the need for advertising revenues, but think of how much less advertis- ing you would need to secure if you didn’t have to employ Doug Callins? By eliminating a ridicu- lous column, you would substan- One reason to. distrust politicians Dear Editor: The reason for public distrust of politicians is graphically il- lustrated by the recent behavior of B.C.'s former Minister of En- vironment, John Reynolds, with fespect to the Kemano 2 dam pro- ject. His promise in Ottawa of public scrutiny was shown to be nothing more than a form of words on his return to Victoria with his reversal of that pledge. Here we have a proposed de- velopment that may have in- calculable results for the whole Fraser watershed with its valuable fishery, yet the public has been consistently denied the opportuni- ty to question its proponents who should be required, at least, to explain how a scheme that may alter the level of the Fraser by up to three feet is not likely to have a downstream effect. The public search for reassur- ance is unlikely to be satisfied given Reynolds’ original stonewalling, followed as that has been by his recent word twisting. Such behavior, rightly or wrongly, is bound to give rise to suspicion in people's minds. David Macaree West Vancouver St. Pierre misses mark on poverty Dear Editor: Paul St. Pierre’s story about Ronda Lauzon in the Nov. 30 News is a complete non sequitor to his opening paragraphs. Does. Mr. St. Pierre ‘know peo- ple in the U.K., as I do, who live entirely on government support and yet do not live in poverty? Through what European coun- tries has he recently travelled? 1f he has been to Greece, for exam- ple, would he maintain that the Greeks had a higher standard of living than the English? Does he really suppose that the English chose Mrs. Thatcher as their leader three times because they enjoy poverty? Bad journalism, obsolete phrases such as the ‘‘ruling classes’? and assinine remarks do little to promote Mr. St. Pierre's left-wing cause. Gerald F. Mason North Vancouver Editorial praised Dear Editor: I wish to compliment you on your timely editorial, ‘‘Losing our voice,’" on Dec. 12. You express eloquently the con- cerns of many Canadians, who regard the CBC as the most im- portant unifying factor in Cana- dian life. | recall Pierre Berton's comment to the effect that Peter Gzowski was single-handedly holding Canada together! I have joined Friends of Public Broadcasting in order to continue opposition to the government’s apparent policy of dismantling “Canada’s few unifying institu- tions.” Thank you for your leadership in this vital matter. Sheilah D. Thompson North Vancouver MAILBOX Newspaper could use a diet tially reduce the amount of fodder in the North Shore News. You might become environmen- tal role models through such a change. I think Doug could handle the change as he says he is against frivolous spending. Being the ide- alist that Doug is, why doesn't he volunteer to cut your expenses? | don’t really think he represents the devil's advocate point of view anyway. lt enjoy Bob Hunter's columns, Michael Becker’s music scene, the much needed classified service, and the forum for dialogue that your letters to the editor provide. But why do J have to read white supremacist trash by Doug Collins and dumb social-climbing weekly columns by the Valerie Gibson clone? It really is possible to produce something we can be proud of.
