The 3.5-litre engine's straight-line pertor-
mance is considerably better than the previous
engine: zero to 100 km-h acceleration times
have been reduced by more than two seconds.
The 2001 Pathfinders sprint to 100 km-h in
8.8 seconds while 2000 Pathfinders take 10.9
seconds. This is fairly quick for an SUV
weighing 1,962 kg (4,325 Ib.)

Surprisingly, fuel consumption for the 3.5-
litre engine is about the same as the 3.3-litre
V6: 15.6 1/100 km in the city and 11.9
1/100 km on the highway, compared to 15.6"
1/160 km in the city and 11.6 1/100 km on
the highway for the 2000 Pathfinder (with
automatic transmission). However, the new
engine requires premium fuel whereas the old
one used regular. For emissions purposes, the
new engine is rated as a low emissions vehicle.

Both available transmissions in the
Pathfinder, a four-speed automatic transmis-
sion and five-speed manual transmission, have
been strengthened to accommodate the extra
power of the new engine.

Part-time or full-time 4WD

Base Pathfinder XE 4X4 models come with
a part-time, shift-on-the-fly, four-wheel-drive
system-that includes a Low "Range gear. For
2001, SE and LE models are available with
Nissan’s “All-Mode 4WD” system, the same
full-time 4WD system offered on the Infiniti
doppelganger QX4. -

choose 2WD (rear-wheel-drive), 4WD Auto
(full-time four-wheel-drive), 4WD Lock (cen-
tre differential is locked for tough situations),

All-mode 4WD has an electronically-con-
trolled centre clutch which varies power distri-
bution to the front or rear wheels depending
on which wheels have the mest traction. In
this full-time mode, the Pathfinder can be dri-
ven on dry or slippery roads without harming
the drivetrain.

New interior features

Though restyled in mid 1999, the 2001
Pathfinder has been given a mild facelift.
including new mvtti-parabola headlights,
body-coloured bumpers, rear tail lights and .
tailgate design.

Inside, is a new centre instrument paiel
design and console with a sportier look, a
leather-wrapped shift knob, one-touch
up/down front power windows, a separate
.clock, a dual level centre console /armirest
with a built-in 12 volt outlet, larger cuphold-_
ers, and a new 12-volt outlet in the cargo
area. There are also nwo additional storage
areas, one under the floor and a concealed bin
in the cargo area.

Dual front airbags are standard, aiid side
airbags (built into the front seats) are available
as an option on SE models and standard on
LE models.

Pathfinder SE and LE models have a new
standard in-dash, six-disc CD changer, steer-
ing wheel audio buttons, and SE models now
have a standard power glass sunroof with
automatic open and close. XE and LE models
have new standard white-faced round gauges
while SE models have titanium-coloured
gauges. Top-of-the-line LE models add a
memiory driver’s seat and auto on/off head-
