way, View Royal was first settled in the 1850s by Dr. John
Helincken, who purchased 259 hectares (640 acres) of farm-
land from the Hudson's Bay Company. Modern View Royal
is mostly residential, but you can still get a good glimpse of
its history at Craigflower Manor and Schoolhouse, a
Narional Historic Site featuring fascinating antique arti-
facts and displays housed in restored buildings.
Colwood
Once an area of farmland operated by the
Puget Sound Agricultural Company,
Colwood is now a residential community
with a bustling commercial district.
Harley Park, one of Colwoad's foremost
attractions, is an elaborate, oceanfront estate
with luxuriant gardens and has, at its centre,
acastle, once che private residence of James
Dunsmuir. The castle is now part of Royal
Roads University and the grounds are open
to visitors daily until dusk.
Fort Radd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse
National Historic Sires are two more of
Colwood's must-see attractions.

Langford

Bordering Colwood, the community of
Langford is the commercial and industrial
centre of the West Shore Communities. The
surrounding forests and freshwater takes that

Provincial Park. The park's network of hiking and walking
trails, a forest of huge old-growth trees, a meandering river
and a nature hut with displays and programs make it popular.

Metchosin

Metchosin is a mainly rural comraunity with winding
country roads, farms, and pastures. Art galleries and studios,
shops, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, and marinas are scat-
tered throughout the area along with several beautiful parks.
Albert Head Lagoon Park has a pretty beach, a lagoon pop-
ulated by many bird species.

Sooke region

Stretched along Vancouver Island's rocky, southwestern
coastline overlooking Juan de Fuca Strait, this region
includes East Sooke Regional Park and encompasses many
of South [sland’s most magnificent natural attractions.

East Sooke Regional Park is one of the area's best desti-
nations for nature lovers. Rocky bays, small beaches, quiet
forests and grassy meadows reward hikers in this 1,422-
hectare park that has nearly 50 kilometres of trails.

Around the other side of the Sooke Basin, take the easy,
20-minute stroll to the end of Whiffin Spit. This natural
breakwater between the Juan de Fuca Strait and Sooke :

West Coast Road

The West Coast Road (Hwy. 14) between. Sooke and
Port Renfrew is one of South Vancouver Island's most spec-
tacular drives. The road winds through coastal rain forest
and along the jagged coastline, past bed and breakfast estab-
lishments and seaside cafés, leading to some amazing beaches -
and ocean viewpoints.
