October 31, 1982 Tel. 985-2131 GEORGE MEEGAN sits in the living room of a luxury apartment in West Vancouver and seems to relax a little, though he will have to move to new quarters in less than a day. Transience is nothing new to him. For the last five years he has been undertaking a voyage of immense proportions, and this is just one more temporary resting place offered by someone who is out of town for a few days. On "1977 January 26, Meegan left a settlement on Tierra Del Fuego, Argen- tina, determined to cross the Western Hemisphere, on foot, ending his journey at Point Barrow, Alaska. The English-born former sailor has travelled 27,960 kilometres and hopes to finish the world's longest foot journey during the summer of 1983. After five years of isolation, broken only by an occasional foray into the North American media circus, Meagan finds himself sacrificing some of his privacy in exchange for the exposure only the media can offer him. He plans to winter in or around Vancouver with his wife and children and is publicizing his need for a rent-free house for the winter in exchange for in- terviews with the local media. Newspaper reporters, talk show hosts and television crews have each taken their turns asking the inevitable questions while Meegan patiently explains that he is neither crazy nor noble, but is merely an individual living out his dream. Meegan first met his wife Yoshiko in Japan and later wrote her of his planned trek. When I join up with my wife we talk about what's on at the movies, what the kids are doing — we hardly ever talk about the trip.” He looks up and cuts off the question before I even consider it: “I don't enjoy perpetually answering the question Why? on my journey.” During our conversation a film crew arrives for an interview, and one of the first questions asked is, 7 ONLY A GREAT NEW IDEA! ‘ SECTION WOMEN «FOOD TRAVEL vi] s on foot : “Why are you taking this trip?” Meegan explains his motivations, realizing that with each interview he must start again at the beginning. The mechanics of the trip are quite simple, but the sheer size of Meegan’s venture can hardly be easily comprehended by the from the parking lot to the office and back again at the end of the day. From the southernmost tip of South America, Meegan has walked step by step north to Central America, through Texas and _ the Eastern Seaboard to On- tario, then across Canada to Vancouver. He has already trekked halfway up British Columbia, but prefers to wait out the winter in the city where the chance of finding accommodation is greater. His journey, though majestic in scale, has been five long years of endless trudging. “For me every mile was hard work. You feel filthy all the time.
