B3 - Sunday, September 5, 1982 - North Shore News There's a lot more to the Whitecaps than those few of us you see down on the field. In fact, we're just the tip of © the iceberg. Below, if you want to use that term, is a massive organization who have to keep the team on the field week after week. ’ And right now, it’s time we took a Jook at one person: who keeps us on the road and in the right cities at the right time throughout the season. Donna Grant of the front office staff is one of those cool, calm persons who never seems rattled. But a‘ look at her responsiblities would frighten off many a player. - Donna is the person who is responsible for seeing that our flights are booked, our hotels and rooms are ready and that transportation is available. She also has to make sure that we get from one place to the next without any confusion. While it's true that many of us players wouldn't even know how to book a flight, Donna would probably have been able to organize the comings and goings of the British Armed Forces in the Falklands. Starting in March, as soon as the scheduling is com- pleted for all teams, Donna contacts Air Canada and HEL | eh ag Soa te vee are TOM SCHIMMER ofNorth Vancouver, and John Dafoe from West helped the Richmond Pony All-Stars win the Western Canadian Bantam-Pony Baseball championships last week. Schimmer and Dafoe are both pitchers, and were added to the Richmond team before it entered’ the championships. Schimmer also played first base during some of the games during the tour- nament in Richmond. He was the tournament's top batter with a .688 average, two home runs and two doubles. But though Dafoe, win- yaw a 1S a t as Corl & Vancouver, by Terry Yorath arranges group rate travel to all our away games and back again. And if that sounds relatively simple, just think of some of those long road trips when we fly three or four different carriers. At the same time she books hotels, either on past performances, or on the advice of the clubs in the cities where we'll be playing. She also has to arrange the right number of rooms and pairing for the trips. That’s not all. Since we don’t travel around by bus when we're on the road, she ning’ pitcher in the final game, tournament all star team. Donna still gets a funny look in her eye when she remembers the player who was drivmg one of the station wagons and rushed everyone out of the car then leaped out himself, locking the doors with the keys still inside and the motor run- ning. Since the players get a per diem allowance on the road, Donna has to set this up as well, making sure everyone is taken care of, which often means arranging U.S. dollars for south of the border travel. Because some of the media travel with the team, Donna makes travel arrangements for them at the same time as booking us. , And since nothing goes according to schedule, she has to be constantly checking and changing throughout the season. At one point during the season Donna had us all set, so she says, to ‘rollerskate through Wichita’ in order to keep up with the schedule. No doubt she meant it.
