A7 - Wednesday, August 4, 1982 - North Shore News HE mailbox Health care is unrestrained THANKS TOFINDER Dear Editor: When is restraint not restraint? Answer. When it is health care in British Columbia! Health care expenditures in B.C. are up another [5 per cent this year. They are up from $2.0 to $2.3 billion in 1982. The income of the average British Columbian, em- ployed and unemployed, is up 6 per cent. Even if in- ‘Sleazy’ way of Dear Editor: Isn't it about time that the apathetic public got off its butt and lodged a formal protest to the government maybe in the form of a petition regarding the im- position of the transit levy on our hydro bills to keep the buses on the road? Such a sleazy way of extorting money from the consumer has got to be the worst yet. Also, the levy on gasoline should not go unchallenged. Both taxes are a rip off of the century and I would like to see court flation runs at a 10 per cent clip health care expenditures are up a further 5 per cent. They are up 5 per cent in “real” terms. They're up twice as much as_ the Province’s population growth. British Columbia has an outstanding record where health care is concerned. It leads all other provinces in health care spending since the NDP was in power in action to test the legality of such a tax. I have always been led to believe that it is part of our democracy that only those elected to govern us have the power to levy taxes upon the citizens. The GVRD should not have that authority. There are thousands of people who never step into a bus. Why should they have to pay for the upkeep cf something they don’t use? Neither should the people who live a long ways from a bus line, nor the elderly or disabled. Since the tax went into Planning to renovate or update your kitchen? Come in to Y. Franks and browse! The Canadian Tax Foundation tells us that in the six year period ending in 1981 B.C. was up 14 percent in “real” terms. Alberta was up II per cent, the next best record. Ontario was down 4 per cent. Manitoba was down 3 per cent. Quebec was down 1 per cent. The Canada average, up a mere 2 percent! - Our Provincial Govern- ment spends more of its budget on health care (now about a third) than any other provincial administration. And the proporation is still rising. Who says, therefore, that health care is being restrained in B.C.? Some change in priorities yes. But restraint, overall, in health care, ridiculous; the facts are there to prove it. Hon. Jack Davis, MLA N. Vancouver-Seymour raising money effect in 1980, they have been increasing it every year, from .61 to $2.90. Where will it end? Dear Editor: I had the pleasure of going to the lounge at the In- ternational Plaza July 23 to see the group “Killarney” perform - great en- tertainment. However, the following day I discovered I had lost my wallet. I phoned the International Plaza and was delighted to find that some person, or persons, had found it and had handed it in to the hotel desk. In these days of difficult times, when most of us are feeling the pinch, it was refreshing to learn that honest people still exist. oS Uy rill iheip you I hope ‘the finder’ will read this and receive my thanks and _ appreciation.
