We were playing pool at my uncle’s place when he
announced that he'd been laid off.

He'd been working for this
outfit, a Ford auto
dealership, for more than 20
years.

Lately, the company had
started to go down the tubes.
There were seven guys in my
ancle’s department. The
seven got whittied down
until there was only Unc.

The owner called him in
and told him that despite the
fact they'd known each other
for more than 20 years, this
was it. Sales were down
drastically. The economy
was in disarray.

And things didn't look ike

' they were going to get better
future.

The owner gave my uncle
a family generous lump of
severance pay, and said he
could stay on, part-time,
untd January, when he'd
turn 60, but after that be was
on his own.

My uncle was shaken —
no doubt about it. Who
wouldn't be?

- He has to start scrambling
im the bleak terrain of the
job marketplace at the age
of 60. He's tough - and
resourceful, but it’s an awful
challenge. You do slow
down.

Telling the story, he didn’t
show the slightest trace of
resentment towards the
owner of the dealership. He
knew perfectly well i wasn't
the owner's fault.

There was 10 pension
plan, but Unc acknowledged

that it was his own and the
other workers’ fault for not
having insisted on it a long
time ago.
So who was to blame? Hm.
By coincidence, my wife
and I and the baby had
showed up at Unc’s place

Unc didn't know aboat
this yet, as he told me the
tale of the misfortunes of the

used to have.

I cried to hem and haw.
My wife took over and broke
the news that we'd sold the
Ford and bought a Honda.

Unc is a gentleman, of
