have to be. Ray Hankin. The,

big target man had a rough”
“season in 1980 and there was
considerable surprise. when.
Giles let it-be known that big ~'

But back he. came.
Starting in«only 14 games,
Hankin picked up 12 goals
and 8 assists compared to his
8-1 record of 1980. In ad-
dition to’ his scoring threat
the big man was able to
absorb tremendous

punishment, freeing people
like Alan faylor and Peter
Beardsley ‘to nip in and
commit+ ‘untold damage on
opposing goalkeepers.

Much of the credit for
Hankin's recovery goes to
Giles and his motivational
game.

And the development of
the young North Americans
would have to be another
highlight. Under the un-
sophisticated Giles' style of
constant hard work and
attack, the younger players
were able, under
influence, to feel that they
belonged on the team and
were able to fit right in.

In fact, during the regular
season, Giles called up a
total of 26 players to
produce for the Caps.

Using a mixture of ex-
perienced pros like assistant
playing coach Peter Lorimer
and the always hard working
captain Terry Yorath, along
with the granite-like Roger

Republic of Ireland, with 60
full caps. In addition he
managed the international
side from 1973 to 1979.

The chief owner and
manager of Shamrock
Rovers, Giles left the

English Footbali league of
his own volition because of
his principles and in-
terference of owners.

After his many famous
years with Manchester
United, Leeds, where he
played with Lorimer, David
Harvey and Terry Yorath,
and manager of West
Bromwich, Giles has tested
the waters of North
America. And judging from

‘his first year’s endeavour,

the league itself should be
pounding on his door asking
him to return for many more
seasons.

Giles has much to offer
this league. Ask the players,
the other managers and the
other teams.

He has an ability which
goes far beyond the realm of
Straight coaching. He has
that unique ability of making
players believe in them-
selves,- a characteristic
which is far more valuable
than a game of soccer.
