When we last glimpsed West Vancouver doctor
Myron MacDonald, he was crawling ashore at
Fanning Island, having avoided being eaten alive
by tiger sharks by not acting like food.

From there, as be and his
companion, Leske Norris,
contmued on their round-
the-world cruise, they
discovered that the worid

arrived in the
Solomon Island to find that
the women were still bare-
breasted. and thai they

It was truce. In fact. a

where Leslie started
teaching crafts to the
matives, crafts such as

making necklaces out of seca
shells, something i turned
out no one had got around to

Imagine it. A lady from
North Van squatung on a
beach in Fiji, with thread
and shells, showing = the
locals how to do it...

At ope pomt on the
voyage. Myron achieved
fleeting but genuine world
fame.

He and a Vancouver
gynecologist Dr. Claude
Cronhelm. teamed up to
help save the hfe of a boy on
board ship that was out al
sea, 16 days from land.

Over the marine radio, the
two doctors diagnosed the
boy's illness. and for four
days, relayed mstructions
until the lad recovered.

The wire services. in-
cluding Canadian Press.
spread the story around the
world.

As a footnote to history.
Myron adds that the reason
the story Bot out in the first
place was because there was
a down-and-out reporter
hanging around the bar
who'd been sent to write a
feature about sports fishing
in Fiji.

Unfortunately for him,
there just wasn’t any sports
fishing in Fiji at all. The guy
was desperate. Taking pity
on him, Myron had
suggested that maybe he'd
be interested in a tale about
a kid being saved by t¥o
doctors using a marine
radio.

For the rest of the voyage.
every time they'd get mail,
there was bound to be a
chpping of the story. sent by
one old fnend or another.

time Myron became tem-
porarily but completely
paralysed and Leshe had to
sail the boa! singlehanded
for 1,000 miles through

I'll leave the rest for them
to put m their memonrs. But
let me report this — I asked
Myron what stood out mosi
in his mind now that the trip
was over.
