WEST VAN‘S OLDEST SCHOOL GOES BILINGUAL A9- Wednesday, June 11, 1980 - North Shore News rm Hollyburn switched to K-4 primary role West Vancouver's oldest school — Hollyburn Elementary — will become a “bilingual” primary school this September. providing both regular English and French immersion programs from kindergarten to grade 4 (K-4). The K-4 French im- mersion program will be transferred to Hollyburn from Ridgeview Elementary. That was the decision unanimously approved Monday night by West Van School Board following a lengthy debate before an audience of 50-60 parents and other interested ob- servers. The need for the change in Hollyburn’s status came lo a head early in May following several years during which the school has been afflicted with declining enrolment and uncertainty about its future. The board was faced with the task of choosing between six alternative plans for Hollyburn, including a Last call generally unacceptable “do nothing” option. The end result was a compromise between the views of the school district staff those of parents. The original staff recom- mendation was for kin- dergarten to grade 3 only in both English and French programs. But a survey of parents during the past few weeks showed a_ strong preference for kindergarten to grade 7. at least in the English program.
