Another old-timer who was
connected with Moodyville
was W.H. Chase, who at one
time lived on Comox Street i in

; Vancouver.

Chase first went to Moody-
villé in January, 1884. He
worked only nine days, as

railway contractor, sent for
him to run his mill at Texas.

Chase cut all the timbers for
bridges, ties and _ other
lumber required.

To haul the logs to the mill -

and the lumber out, Onder-

donk brought up a locomo- .

tive which he had used when
-building the San Francisco
sea wall. This engine, which
was named the Curly, was
the first used in logging
operations in British Colum-
bia and was of. the saddle —
_tank type, that is, it had no-
“tender .but a water tark
_ Shaped like a saddle over the-
boiler. Its wheels. were very .
low and it could pull a huge
‘ load for those'days up a steep

brother ‘bought the old
Deighton Hetel which they
were running at the time of
the great fire in i886. Soon
after that’ disaster a firm

called Leamy & Kyle com- -
menced. the erection of the
“‘Red Mill’’ on False Creek,
and Chase was made mill
superintendent, J.G. Woods
being manager.
