GET a kick out of politicians. West Van councillor Diana Hutchinson wants to ban noise. Her concerns are car horns, bird twittering, barking dogs and construction noise. Diana, take a pill. In a community where pedestri- ans assume that cars can stop ona dima, signalling is passe, stop signs are ignored, and the accepted method of getting to Capers is by pulling a U-turn in the-25th Street intersection, drivers need horns. Dogs take pride in barking — they think it’s fun. , And their owners occasionally want them to bark -- at least one Jehovah's Witness will never set foot on my property again. As for prolonged barking by tethered dogs, that is best handled by the SPCA. ; And while there are mornings when | would prefer to not have tweeting at my bedroom window, any attempt to curb bird-singing is just plain — well, English. As to your final complaint, Louise Aird BRIGHT LIGHTS Diana, if you want construction noise stopped, try something unheard of at West Van Municipal Hall - stop issuing development and construction permits. kkk Went to the 62nd Annual United Scottish Highland Games. Five thousand people showed for the event, in which 12 bands, 44 individual pipers, 40 individual - drummers, and 184 dancers, aged three and up, competed. There was fiddling, caber toss- ing, etc., and it was nice to see faces from other cultures — Chinese, Italian, East Indian and aboriginal. And the newly reunited Sir John A. MacDonald band should be promoted to Grade 1 — they were excellent. The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band shone, as usual, win- ning the day. They'll soon leave for Scotland where they'll try again for the world championship. They’re always in the top six — last year, they came in third, behind the Strathclyde Police and a band from — what? — Northern trelandt kkk A bad case of laryngitis left me temporarily grounded, so | didn’t catch much of this year’s Du Maurier International Jazz Festival, which was very successful. t did see three concerts, though, all at the Commodore, and | sent members of my family to see eae OTR everything else. One sister reports that Brazilian eccentric Tom Ze was ‘‘just wild’ — lots of fun and musically great. She also said that the Plaza of Nations was jammed for a concert by Vancouver's Robin Shier Quintet and Soweto’s Mzwahke Mbuli. .. My mother went to Gastown to hear Toronto’s Alex Dean Quartet and left with her hands over her ears, Then she and my other sister went to see Montreal’s Andalous (“boring’’); and Tuck & Patti, which they said was “OK” — their repertoire could use a little work — too much scat. I saw Dr. John, who was superb. This was his first time here — he now plays in all the world’s major jazz festivals and, I’m told, he has perfected his band and is at his peak. Fellow Big Easy native Terrance’ Simien was equally impressive — the Zydeco King and his accordion “RE where he played in the Du had the joint jumpin’, despite the — fact that a good chuck of the «au- dience left early after weariny themselves out dancing to Texan Anson Funderburgh and his Rockets (what isthe matter with young people these days?). If ! were the festival organizers, 1 wottld book the big guys on weeknights and the low-key acts on Sundays — Duke Robillard and Tom Ze shouldn’t have performed on Sunday, Tuck & Patti should have. ; Little Charlie and the Night Cats, in ducktails and alligator shoes, were the festival’s snazziest dress- ers — and they make a lot of great noise for four white bays from California. : Charlie — a Grifters version of Elvis Costello, plays ene mean harmonica. { highly recommend that you hunt down CDs of the acts I saw. | bought their tapes — now I’m go- ing to grab my dog, crank up my car stereo and drive over to Diana Hutchinson’s house.
