ANNE McKevitt has a
thing for colour.

The British interior designer and
host of the BBC ‘TV show Home
Front likes to use paint to transform
living spaces to give them a bright,
contemporary feel.

In Stvle an a Shoestring, the book
she’s authored with Australian
designer Shelley Warrington, she
shares her ideas for decorating
homes quickly and inexpensively.

Using before and after pho-
tographs, the designers share their
i ative approach to home dec-
orating. It’s an approach that’s not
for everyone, as McKevitt and her

senses and confound good taste.

Another of McKevitt’s misguid-
ed suggestions, this one for spruc-
ing up the vedroom, involves a
sheet of veils cetting pierced with
imitation flowers hung from a cur
tain rod at the head of the bed. It
looks more like a misplaced shower
curtain than the bedhead centre-
piece it is suppo:

decor — lots of colour blocking
and cardboard cutouts — and are in
danger of becoming casily dated.

Where MeKevitt’s daring decor
may find a suitable home is in the
children’s room.

A simple shelving unit can be
transformed through the use of
paint and the addition of doors cut
by a carpenter to look like a house
facade, she suggests. Dresser draw-
ers can be adorned with gift-wrap
cutouts of whimsical items iaminat
ed and affixed to velcro so that chil-
dren can move them around.
