They tackled them head on. “TIe’s very unique,” said Mark Ostry, of Acton, Johnson and Ostry Architects Inc. “It was a challenging site, but we embraced the chal- lenges and turned them into oppertunitics ” For that, the architects have been recognized by the ‘Architectural Institute of B.C. with a Lieutenant Governor’s Medal in Architecture for the ».. synagogue, which is the only ~ -one.on the North Shore. * «To insulate the congrega- tion from the traffic the archi- tects used heavy masonry walls and concrete elements in the design. According to Har- El executive director Sheila Miistein, the solid presence of the building adds to its spiri- tuality. “One of the most remarkable things about this . building is the effect it has on people,” she said in a press release. “Whether it’s the wooded setting, the dramatic Jerusalem stone, the many symbolic elements integrated into the design, or simply the way the building seems to shelcer one from the outer world, there’s something here that seems ro touch an elemental chord in everyone.” Protecting the stream was also incorporated into the design..." /“We worked with the. Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to meet the requirements for working near the creek and we established a covenant to protect it,” said Ostry. The congregation has also launched a creek enhancement program. The end result is a protected outdoor terrace at the creek’s edge which will be used for community celebrations. Of even more influence than the challenges of the site, said Ostry, was the congregation itself. “We worked very closely with the congregation, with the building committee, as to what their needs were — that really shaped the design.” AT A GLANCE...
