The overtlow attendance at the Sept. 29 meeting at West Vancouver high school proved thar Laree’s claim to be working in the best interests of the community is not correct. There was not a single voice raised in support of the pro- posed expansion. The stunning arrogance exhibited by the Larco repicsenta- tive stirred normally polite and laid back West Vancouverites to a level of hostility and anger rarely, if ever, seen before. The message received by the audience was, in essence, that no matter what the community wishes were, the expansion would proceed. To their credit, council members, with the exception of the mayor, asked all the tough questions that appeared to reflect the mood and sentiments of the community. The Larco representative, supported by the mayor, exhibit- ed, what [ say, was an appalling lack of sensitivity towards women by requiring that every public speaker provide their name and address, tor the record, ostensibly in order for Larco to respond personally to the individual concern. There are nwo things wrong with that: first, and of overrid- ing concern, it potentially exposes women to danger (where else are women required to provide their name and address in pub- lic and on TV?). The mayor, of all people, ought to know bet- ter. Second, Larco, by insisting upon a one-on-one response, effectively ensures that their response, if any, remains hidden from the community at large On Sept. 29, West Vane they did not like it. David Matland West Vancouver cr saw the real face of Larco, and Erect expansion shield Dear Editor: It is revealing of our soci- ety that business can brazenly parade its amorality in the fashion that occurred at the recent public meeting on Park Royal expansion. We had the argument that because Whistler developers or other insensitive parties get away with projects that inflict great secondary social costs, Lareo is justified in screwing the community in the same fashion if it can do so legally — which of course it can by using the Indian land dodge. It is also perfectly acceptable to purchase established recre- ational assets and destroy the community infrastructure built around those facilitics by their conversion :» whatever commercial use chs owner feels is more profitabic Again perfectly legal. Our only response to a commercial pariah is to shield ourselves as best we can from it. Why not close all access to Park Royal South from Marine Drive, including Tavlor Way south of Marine, thereby getting rid of a unffic light and a lot of cars that would then have to be directed into North Vancouver through Indian Jand. If the mali operators want or need West Vancouver community support, they would also no doubt prefer to have their own water and sewage system as well as police and fire protection. Of course we would want to plant some trees along Marine drive to hide and thus “miti- gate the impact” of the dese- cration beyond. D.
