Cash investments (traditional deposits) can play an impor- tant role in a well-diversitied portolio. They can provide security, flexibility, a broad range of maturities, and that magic word, “liquidinv” - a safety net when other invest- ments are unstable or when you simply need some accessi- ble cash. What csgc'y is a tional depest™? Well, come in: *-* «= st classes: B Cash/saviugs accounts: Liquidity is the key, but there’s a low interest sate. However, your moncy is available for any investment opportunities or for an emergency. This is the “slush fund” approach. @ Fixed interest investments or guaranteed interest invest- ments: Net as liquid as cash/savings accounts but they have a better, secure interest rate, and your princi- pal and interest is usually guar- anteed. Examples include GICs, term deposits and bonds. The next asset level for investing would be equities, including stocks, sophisticated investments, and mutual funds. These all have the potential for high interest rates ut the principal and interest rate are not guaranteed.. You can earn a Jot more money than the other two asset types, but of course you can also carn less. As you know from the cur- rent fanfare on investing, there are riskier investments which offer a higher rate of interest. Bur if you want a safe invest- ment with a decent rate of interest, there are many attrac- tive offerings out there right now, thanks to the competitive banking environment. Financial institutions are offering such things as bonus rates on deposits and term deposits with appealing fea- tures. For example, here are some tips on what to ask for from your financial institution term “tradi- these deposits which give you a bet- ter “bang for your buck”: @ Traditional term deposit: with bonus rates through “relationship banking” (how's that for a ‘90s term?) — in other words, you'll get a better rate if you do all of your bank- ing here @ “Hedge-your-bets” type GIC: usually a locked in investment with a one-time opportunity to break it if inter- est rates go up. You can rein- at the new higher rate. Escalating-type term Meposit: the longer yotr money is in, the better the interest rate. For example, you might get an interest rate of 3% in the first year, 4% in the second year, and so on. This type of term deposit is normal- ly a minimum three-year term, with some as long as 7 and 10 years. W@ Index-linked term deposit: a mutual fund with training wheels. This is an opportunity to safely play the stock market. For example, if you walk into your favourite neighborhood - financial institution and’ say “hey, I have $20,000 and I want an index-linked term deposit” you won’t get a quot- ed rate ‘of interest. Instead, you’ll be paid an interest rate of whatever you would have . made if your money was invested in the-stock marker." The guarantee is. that you won’t lose your principle (a. guarantee that doesn’t exist in regular stock market invest- .- ing). The good part is you - could get returns like the stock market. It’s linked to some- : thing like the TSE 100 index, the wp 100 big-name compa- nies in the ‘Turenta Stock Exchange. As goes that index, sO goes your investment. Interest rates may be low, bur as we move into this fall investment season you're in a- good position to still find an attractive yet guaranteed investment vehicle for your hard-earned dollars.
