The city children’s library lends
out about 600 books a day.

Book lending is as popular in
North Vancouver District's (NVD)
three libraries where the children’s
section tallied 2,647 take-outs on one
April day, for example. :

Allison Haupi, children’s and
young adults’ service coordinator for
NVD public libraries, said that chil-' -
dren are usually involved in a lot of '
activities these days and may not
have a fot of time to read.

“They have always been busy
with sports and friends and things
like that, but videos, computers and
computer gaines are taking up what
used to be more of their free time,”.
said Haupt.

Haupt said the children’ ‘s section

in NVD public libraries has more
than doubled its circulation in the’
past 10 years.

In West Vancouver - District . .
(WYD), about 634 books were lent
out each day in the children’s and
youth section in March.

Librarian Julia Hedley, head of
youth services at the West Vancouver
Memorial Library, agrees that chil-.
dren’s time is at a premium.
