Learning the art of the old bunker shot ONE OF the most frequently asked questions from inexperi- enced players is how to get out of a bunker and stay on the green. By Jason Paukkunen Contrilnating Writer Imagine two finages. One is the action of splashing semeone in the water, You ttke your right hand and skitn the surface und send a spray forward. You don’t stab your hand deep into the water. It is the same action when you hit the sand in front of a golf ball. You splash the sand and bat! out of the bunker. The other image you need is the action of trying to skim a flat stone on the water. You have to throw it at a shallow angle so it will bounce. This is the real ingredient to hitting a proper sand shot. Most players set up “normal” and do not open the club face enough to allow the bal! to bounce. If the edge of the club hits the sand, it will dig in, You don't want that to happen, You need to open your stance about 40 degrees (Cin other words aim lo swing five lo seven feet left of your target). Next, lay the sand wedge so that if you put it down it would rest on its back and the face of the club would be looking almost skyward. Grip it normal and play the ball for- ward of centre in your stance. Swing the club up to hip level and gock your wrists completely, When you bring it down, aim to hit about iwo inches behind the ball. It is not a stiff swing. Use your wrists and your hands to make sure the club hits the sand the way you set it up, Spank the sand and splash it and the ball out of the bunker. The fol- low-through will be longer than the backswing. Once you are able to lob it out successfully, practise the length of swing and how far behind the ball you hit to control distance.
